The Columbus Blue Jackets came back from an early deficit to dispatch the Red Wings in a game that saw the Blue Jackets go into a bit of a defensive shell but were able to hold on with help from Sergei Bobrovsky.
Highlights:
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The Good: Sergei Bobrovsky
Bob was bob. The tank is trying to come into town but Bobrovsky has had other plans. A .976 sv% will win you mostly every game. It wasn’t a very sustainable game but nonetheless you have to give a tip of a cap to Bob, who seems to be coming into his own late into the season.
The Bad: Kevin Connauton and Cody Goloubef
While playing third pairing minutes most of the night they seemed to take the brunt of Todd Richards coaching decisions. They were pinned in the defensive zone for most of their zone starts and their even strength corsi percentage was 17% and 16% respectively. Connauton got into a fight on the evening that really brought nothing to the table and probably should have been avoided with the puck in the offensive zone. Goloubef had trouble clearing the goal mouth most of the night and found himself positionally out of place on multiple occasions. Both are promising young players that may end up being a part of the long term plans but tonight was not their night.
The Ugly: Defensive Shell
In a time honored tradition if the Blue Jackets hold a lead for a long period of time they will inevitably go into a shell and let the other team get an opportunity to get back into the game. This phenomenon happens to a lot of teams but the key is to combat it with offensive pressure. This killer instinct has been lacking for a while but luckily the Blue Jackets were able to get away with it. How much longer can they survive with this plan?
