In a game so nice Marko Dano scored twice the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Vancouver Canucks by the score of 6-2. In one of the more entertaining games of the season, the Jackets were able to overcome the early deficit to score six unanswered goals.
Highlights:
Good, Better, Best
Good: Sergei Bobrovsky
Bobrovsky was once again doing his best Bobrovsky impression. Lulling the other team to sleep with a false sense of security and BAM, he absolutely shuts the door on you. This game after the first period frankly had no business being as close as it was and the only person to be thanked was Bob. Twenty saves in the first is a cringeworthy number but in reality it seemed to calm down the Jackets who knew their goaltender was in A+ form after the period. A .950 sv% will always keep a team in a game and luckily the Jackets have an ace up their sleeve with Officer Bob.
Better: Cody Goloubef and Kevin Connauton
A very encouraging tandem that we saw this evening was that of Goloubef and Connauton. Both are relatively young and are looking to establish themselves on a defense that has been described as “less than settled” more games like tonight and they may find themselves as a solid pair come next year. They both were above 50% CF at even strength this evening and although they took many offensive zone starts, a third pairing like themselves should be able to take advantage of the opporunities given to them and they did just that. Often times out on the ice with the Babysitters line* (trademark pending), they were a stabling force that just needed to play rock steady and allow Hartnell, Wennberg and Dano to do their jobs.
Best: The Babysitters Line (Hartnell, Wennberg and Dano)
Head Coach Todd Richards admittedly said he was just throwing some lines at the wall and wanted to see what would stick with this line. Boy, did it ever stick. Dano had his fourth multi point game and first ever three point game this evening, late in this 14-15 campaign he has established himself as a near lock for the team next year, injuries be damned. Hartnell was able to take a perfect saucer pass from Dano and got himself a goal so darn pretty I wanted to take it out on a date. While Wennberg only potted an empty net goal, it wasn’t as easy as it sounded with all the hard work he put into retrieving the puck from the defensemen. Doesn’t seem like Hartnell is teaching the kids anymore, in fact he may be able to learn a thing or two from the young Blue Jackets, a notion that seemed crazy only a month ago.
