Welcome to Fighter Diaries, another feature of Undercard Superstar. We’ll be talking with fighters of all shapes and sizes and of different combat sports to get inside their heads and find out what it’s like to be in their shoes. This week, Andy Anderson shares his tales as he prepares for his first no-gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament.
I am currently a 24 year old MBA student looking at a career in Athletic Administration and HR resources as well as becoming a professional MMA fighter as well. I was born with cerebral palsy, started wrestling after seeing Rulon Gardner vs Alexander Karelin in the 2000 Olympics when I was in 7th grade. Wrestled varsity for four years, and two at JUCO level at Niagara County Community College (top 10 program, and Rashad Evans is a fellow alum) during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. Transferred to a school in Ohio, played rugby but was missing a combat sport, started MMA training in March 2012, started gi jiu jitsu under Warren Stout in May 2012, a Renzo Gracie black belt based in Pittsburgh, PA.
I am currently a two stripe white belt and now training full time at Renzo Gracie Pittsburgh. I plan on doing as many tournaments as I can this year, and hope to began my MMA career in 2013 as well.
On February 9, I’ll be competing in my very first no gi tournament at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA.
Stay tuned as Andy keeps checking in with us on his first of hopefully many successes in the BJJ and MMA world! Andy can be reached @AndyAndersonBJJ
