FIGHT: Andre Fili vs. Ricky Wallace
DATE: September 7
CARD: Tachi Palace Fights 14: Validation
VENUE: Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino
LOCATION: Lemoore, California
RESULT: Fili R2 Submission (Armbar)
JUDGES’ SCORECARD: n/a
MY SCORECARD: n/a
PLAY-BY-PLAY: (via Dallas Winston)
Round 1: Wallace unrolls a huge overhand right off the bat to back Fili off. The pair square off and hurl consecutive rights and lefts with a few landing for both fighters. Fili eats a right and drops levels for a takedown, but Wallace boots him off and we pause for a misplaced mouthpiece. Wallace thwacks a stiff one-two on the restart, then staggers Fili with a right cross. Fili goes back to his roots and hits another takedown, but Wallace kicks him away again. Now it’s Wallace who gets low and nails a double leg; Fili stays patient against the fence, pushes the head away and stands back up. They waste no time trading more big punches. Wallace thinks about a spinning back fist but just spins with no fist and digests a two-piece from Fili, who notches a double leg after they re-engage. Fili cracks off a wild series of punches and moves toward Wallace’s back while unloading furiously. Referee Marcos Rosales, normally a decent official, let all three fights he reffed earlier go on too long, and does the same here. Wallace takes a merciless beating on the way back to his feet, then gets dropped on his ass with another punch and Rosales lets it all go until the bell.

Round 2: Fili capitalizes on a visibly out of sorts Wallace with a few punches and another takedown. Wallace is game and escapes once again and turns the tables with a double leg. Fili reverses but can’t hold top position for long and they restart standing. Wallace is stunned with more leather and easily taken down by Fili. The commentary team are justifiably criticizing the poor judgment of referee Rosales. Fili drops back for a submission, Wallace fends it off but Fili transitions smoothly into an armbar. Fili, belly down with the armbar, is interrupted by Rosales. He grabs Fili awkwardly for a moment before waving the fight off despite no tap; ironic, as he missed an obvious tapout earlier in the evening. Commentator Jordan Breen deems Rosales’ performance “one of the most embarrassing in MMA” and it’s unfortunate that he’s correct.

Lauzon quickly regains his composure and keeps coming forward, wraps Varner up and drills the former WEC champ with a knee up the middle. Already breathing hard midway through the first frame, Varner misses with a jump knee and whiffs on the elbows behind it. Varner just grazes Lauzon’s face with a left hook and right cross; Lauzon covers up under fire and takes a ripping shot to the body. Lauzon scores with a pair of clean right hands, but a left behind the ear sends “J-Lau” to the floor. Varner goes down to his guard and Lauzon tries a straight armbar, can’t get it. Lauzon gets to his knees and absorbs a few knees to the body, and that’s where the round ends.

Round 2: Varner goes to some outside leg kicks to begin round two; he steps in with a four-piece punching combo, but Lauzon sees it coming and covers up. Lauzon puts up his guard again as Varner probes with jabs and straight punches. Varner scores with a punch to the body, a knee up the middle and a short elbow inside. He wraps Lauzon’s waist and tries to trip him down, but Lauzon stays up. Lauzon pushes Varner into the fence and Varner willingly falls to his back with a guillotine locked up. Lauzon has good posture to pop his head out, though, and he hops onto Varner’s back in one motion. Varner stands and shakes off Lauzon, then goes back to slugging while Lauzon covers up. Good one-two to the body from Varner, and now Lauzon storms forward, hustling Varner to the floor and pinning down his left arm. Lauzon gets off a few punches before Varner flips over and gets to his knees, then stands back up with Lauzon still shoving him into the cage. Lauzon drags Varner to the floor again and takes back mount, this time sinking in his hooks to control the back. Varner slips out the back door just before the horn and drops a couple elbows.

Round 3: Lauzon and Varner hug to begin the final frame, but ref Luis Cobian realizes soon after the start of the round that Varner’s mouthpiece isn’t in. The corner fixes this and the lightweights get back to work. Varner double-legs Lauzon to the floor one minute into the round and works from half-guard for 20 seconds until Lauzon sweeps his way free. Varner throws a combo and Lauzon covers up. Lauzon comes forward and Varner backs him off with a right. Though tired, Varner is still firing hard shots inside, punches and elbows, though none are scoring very effectively with Lauzon covering. Varner hits another takedown, but Lauzon flips him over the top with underhooks and cinches up a triangle choke. Varner resists for a moment while Lauzon elbows from the bottom. Lauzon tightens the choke and Varner has nowhere to go. Joe Lauzon gets the submission win at 2:44 of the third round in a real thriller.

Round 1: Tan Dan is looking particularly orange tonight. And they touch gloves. They’re both throwing heat…no feeling out process. Zombie gets a takedown but Poirier gets up and goes for a single. Now they’re clinching against the cage with Poirier doing the pushing. Zombie with a great greco takedown and he’s in Poirier’s full guard. Zombie throwing good elbows and Poirier is cut on his forehead. Zombie looking strong in top position. Poirier lands a good upkick and reverses position. Poirier lands in Zombie’s full guard and now Zombie is trying to wall walk up to his feet. Poirier controlling him against the cage but not much action. Back to their feet. Porier lands a good knee and now they’re throwing bombs. Nothing lands and the round ends.

Round 2: I just accidentally erased my whole round 2…the best round of the night. So I had to rewind and here I am. Let me just say that Poirier was almost tapped multiple times and the Zombie transitioned from arm bar to triangle and back multiple times.

Round 3: Fuck I can’t believe I just erased all of that glorious work. Poirier lands a good shot and now their trading bombs. Most of them are missing and they both look pretty tired. Zombie eats a good straight left and a leg kick. Poirier starting to land some clean shots. Zombie living up to his name doesn’t seem to care. Huge takedown by Zombie and Poirier ends up standing up. Both guys landing good shots but Zombie doesn’t seem to mind it. Zombie landing the better strikes but Poirier not giving up. Both guys using their faces to block punches. Round ends like a scene from Road house.

Round 4: Both guys throwing sloppy shots. Zombie land a one-two followed by a huge flying knee. Poirier in trouble in the d’arce choke. And that’s it! What a finish. Korean Zombie by d’arce choke in a dominating performance.

Round 1 – Jason Herzog draws the reffing duty for the second time tonight. They touch gloves and get going. They start trading early. Big kick from Kedzie is on the button to the side of the head, and Tate has to withstand some damage to stay standing. Outside leg kick from Tate, but Kedzie again pushes forward and lands a couple nicely. Good right from Tate, and a counter from Kedzie right before a clinch. Knee from Kedzie is good to the body. Kedzie tries to come over the top of Tate’s hook with a right elbow, and then she has a nice reversal on teh wall. An elbow from Kedzie finds the mark, adn then they split out of there back to the middle. Tate with a shot at a double, but Kedzie sprawls it out and lands a couple shots on the ground. Kedzie then listens to her corner as Greg Jackson tells her to wisely back out. She does, and when Tate again wants to shoot, it’s not there. Kedzie has north-south control on Tate’s back and tries to land some body shots. She pushes her off, then almost immediately comes forward with a right hand. Jackson yelling loudly to Kedzie. Another shot from Tate, but not much there. They both hit the turf, but Kedzie pops back up right away and they tie up. Leg kick from Kdezie, and she again sprawls nicely on a Tate shot and lands body punches. Then a couple rights to the haw. Then a big left kick from Kedzie takes Tate off her feet when it drills her chin. Kedzie moves in right away and looks to land. She’s landing and appears to have Tate in trouble. But Tate defends wonderfully with a triangle that has Kedzie in trouble. Kedzie rolls out of it and survives the round.

Round 2 – Left and right from Kedzie. Tate answers, and they tie up. Kedzie kicks to the body. They trade knees along the fence, and Kedzie looks to pepper in an elbow. There’s a scramble and a takedown, and it’s Kedzie on the bottom looking for a triangle. It’s not there yet, but she has Tate’s arm in short order and is looking to finish. Tate rolls out of imminent danger, but Kedzie still has her tied up. Tate struggles to get her left arm free. She finally does and takes Kedzie’s back and looks for the rear-naked choke. She gets a body triangle and lands some fists to the side of the head. She has to let off the trangle, but she’s still got back mount and the choke looks good. Kedzie is struggling to find a way out of this. Tate in full mount and looks for elbows. Kedzie gets back to half guard, but soon after she rolls into a guillotine. But she has to let off that, as well, and Kedzie manages to make it back to her feet. Tate looking for the double, then a single, and she does spill the fight to the canvas. But Kedzie will survive the round after being in a lot of trouble.

Round 3 – Kedzie opens with a kick, then another to the back of Tate’s leg knocks her off her feet. Both women look a little tired. Good side kick to the body from Kedzie, followed by an outside leg kick. Then Kedzie lands a kick to the face and Tate is down. Kedzie is right on top of her and landing elbows as Herzog looks on. Tate looks completely exhausted. But she manages to roll into a triangle and armbar and she’s looking to finish Kedzie here. Kedzie rolls out of it as Jackson tells her to stand up out of it. Tate still looking to finish and has a lot of time. Kedzie trying to roll her way out of it. Kedzie rolls and she may have rolled the wrong way. And oh sweet irony, Tate has an armbar and the crowd goes nuts. she’s looking to stretch it out and torque it as Kedzie tries to find a way to defend with her foot. And finally, Kedzie has to tap. Amazing fight. Tate was kicked in the face on the front end of the round and rallies for the submission.
