Welcome to another installment of UndercarDVR, where we review what you need to see from this week in combat sports. We go fight by fight to see whether it needs to be watched, deleted, or put in fast forward.
A surprisingly big main event for a Friday night PBC on Spike card featured Adrien Broner taking on Ashley Theophane in a super lightweight/light welterweight bout that saw Broner lose his WBA Super Lightweight trinket on the scales.
Get your remotes ready.
Adrien Broner defeated Ashley Theophane by ninth-round TKO in a light welterweight bout (Broner lost WBA Super Lightweight Championship; title now vacant).
- In the most Broner fashion possible, he managed to win a fight but still lose his title. Broner was on his way to a decision against the game Theophane and it looked as though he was going to do his sad Mayweather imitation into another decision loss. Broner caught Theophane and dropped him with a very questionable blow on the belt. After the win, Broner called out Floyd Mayweather, showing that he is at least keeping kayfabe correctly if anything else.
- Broner is easily the most frustrating fighter to watch in boxing, deciding to do a sad Mayweather defensive act when his hand speed and power is more geared toward fighting inside. Theophane pressured Broner, but it was really nothing we haven’t seen over and over before. Maybe pause for the finish and the post-fight antics. Verdict: Fast Forward.
Robert Easter Jr. defeated Algenis Mendez by fifth-round TKO in a lightweight bout.
- Easter got a good challenge here against Mendez and proved his status as a top lightweight while showing he can withstand some shots from more elite competition. While Easter was never in clear danger here, Mendez was able to take a round or two from him and trouble him before getting wilted with combos. Easter is ready and will be must-watch for his next few.
- With a beautiful finish and a steady, competitive fight for the four rounds previous, Easter and Mendez put on a show. A showcase fight with impressive results for the intended name and Easter has earned the eyes of boxing fans as he has now established himself as a legitimate challenger. Verdict: Watch.
Gervonta Davis defeated Guillermo Avila by sixth-round TKO in a super featherweight bout.
- This opener was intended for the TMT prospect Davis and he delivered with a combination finish in the sixth on Avila. Davis will probably continue to open cards like these for his next one or two, but his exciting style and intangibles really could propel him to compelling challengers soon after.
- This was rather one-sided, but Davis is worth the time for his potential and his style. Verdict: Watch.
