UndercarDVR: Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN

Welcome to another installment of UndercarDVR, where we review what you need to see from this week in combat sports. We go fight by fight to see whether it needs to be watched, deleted, or put in fast forward.

The next-to-last PBC on ESPN card of the year (and potentially ever?) came to us from the former ECW Arena Friday night with the nineteen year-old David Benavidez looking to continue to boost his resume against the game young vet Denis Douglin at super middleweight. Most importantly though, did Teddy Atlas leg drop New Jack through a press table?

Get your remotes ready.

David Benavidez defeated Denis Douglin by tenth-round TKO in a super middleweight bout.

  • It took all ten, but the nineteen year-old prospect Benavidez came back from a slow start to batter Douglin as the fight went on. Douglin seemed to be hurt at various points past the halfway mark and Benavidez finally made good at the end of the ninth and clinched in the tenth with a flurry. Benavidez has some serious power and has a really good run this early in his career. He’s worth keeping an eye on as a legit prospect or even just a dangerous and exciting fighter if he fails to hit his ceiling. Douglin will continue to putter around at the top of the lower ranks in the division and being a feeder to legit prospects who need the boost.
  • A good showcase for an exciting fighter, but not really much worth paying too much attention to here. Garden variety, but not bad. Keep your finger on the pause button for particular shots and maybe let it play through those final two. Otherwise, zoom on through. Verdict: Fast Forward.

Alejandro Luna defeated Naim Nelson by unanimous decision in a catchweight bout.

  • Luna got the job done here against the local replacement opponent Nelson, who took the place of an overweight Stephen Ormond. This was to be an eliminator for the IBF lightweight belt until Ormond missed weight. Luna has a fine shot to make some noise in a paper-thin lightweight division as it stands. Nelson was game and that’s all you can expect here.
  • Nothing was really in question here. Nelson made Luna work for the victory and took a round or two, but Luna was clearly a notch above and his next fight should be more worth a look. Verdict: Delete.
