2012 Who Ya Gonna Draft? – Stephen Hill

PJD is on vacation, STILL. During this time, we’ve decided we’ll take a quick look at potential Minnesota Vikings draft picks for the second or later rounds. With so many needs and so many draft picks to get this team back to a place where we can at least pretend they are respectable, we’ll have plenty of ground to cover. Let us know what you think of each prospect in the comments, and whether or not they’d be a good fit or impact player, and of course if you can think of a funny nickname for them.

Today, we look at Georgia Tech wide receiver, Stephen Hill, who is built like a brick shit house and could easily beat up Greg Camarillo.

From ESPN’s draft analysis, we find out the following useless bits of info from this monster receiver:

Overall Football Traits

Production 4 “2009: (13/1) 6-137-22.8-1 2010: (12/9) – 15-291-19.4-3 2011: (13/13) 28-820-29.3-5 Career: 12 carries-147-12.3-1 “
Height-Weight-Speed 3 Above average height and average bulk but top-send speed is below average.
Durability 2 Missed 2009 Vanderbilt game with flu like symptoms.
Intangibles 3 Ruled academically ineligible for the 2010 AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl in 2010. He has reportedly made an effort to surround himself with positive people off the field and improved his overall work ethic over the past year. Father played basketball at Lake City College and three cousins have played college sports.

Wide Receiver Specific Traits

Separation Skills 3 Doesn’t sink hips and explode out of cuts but better than expected route runner considering played in run-heavy scheme that limited reps. Maximizes burst with tempo and changes speeds quickly at the top of stem. Shows good feel for zone looks and settles into pockets. Uses active hands and quick feet to get inside leverage on quick slants and posts. Shields defenders from the ball. Flashes the ability to locate seams in zone looks.
Ball Skills 4 Appears to have big hands on film and flashes the ability to make spectacular one-handed catches. Can make over the shoulder catches. Absorbs contact and holds onto the ball. Not a natural pass catcher though and drops have been an issue. Basket and body catches too many passes. Can take eye off the ball before securing it.
Big play ability 2 A bit inconsistent in this area but has the upper body strength and quick feet to beat press coverage. Long strider with deceiving top-end speed and appeared faster than listed speed on film. Tracks the deep ball well and can adjust to it without taking his eyes off it. Flashes the ability to make the first defender miss but doesn’t appear to have breakaway speed after the catch.
Competitiveness 2 Calls for the ball. Not afraid to expose frame to big hit. Turns into a defender when ball is thrown up for grabs. Appears to tweak hamstring in the fourth quarter against North Carolina in 2011 but stays in the game. Runs hard and fights for yards after contact. Not aggressive enough as a blocker but average effort and can get in the way. Doesn’t run every route with the same sense of urgency.

Receiver needs for this disaster of a team are well established. We’ve talked a bit about drafting someone like Alshon Jeffery in the 2nd round, who would be a good pick, but may need to look to some later round options as well. That’s where you find someone like Georgia Tech’s Stephen Hill, who isn’t exactly flying under the radar, but probably doesn’t get the attention he deserves having gone to GT, which is a predominantly option running school. For you losers who don’t follow college football, that means he’d be a perfect complement to a Tim Tebow team. There’s lots of things to like about Stephen Hill, in particular how he’d fit in with the Vikings. At 6’4″, he’d be an ideal red zone target for us, which we haven’t had since Squid Rice left the team and the Vikings decided to keep Joe Webb as a quarterback. He’s also a good run blocking wide receiver, which isn’t something you would normally think of in a receiver, but when you’re running your offense through Purple Jesus and have a young quarterback behind center, that’s a nice quality to have. While Hill’s speed isn’t great (his combine 40-time should be out there somewhere, maybe proving me just as smart as ESPN), his size would potentially make up for it on our offense. The Vikings still need someone to stretch the field, so he may not be the guy to do it, but if he can get 15-20 yards down field and jump over cornerbacks to “go deep,” that might be good enough.

Amazingly, Stephen Hill is a black guy. I say amazingly because I can’t think of a white name out there. Maybe Keith Beck? I don’t know.

What say you?
