Just for the record, I was always one of the Minnesota Vikings fans who hated the idea of Brett Favre coming to play for us, at any time. Sure, he surprised the hell out of everyone and almost got our team of misfits to a Super Bowl in 2009, but his return in 2010 was … How do we put this … “Less than.” But why did it suck so much? Was it Brad Childress’ fault? Randy Moss? Greg Camarillo? No, it was of course Brett Favre’s fault, because he held the team hostage, took a bunch of money, and apparently wasn’t that into the whole thing anyway. Essentially.

So why did Favre return? He did it for the same reason most people do their jobs: For the money. “First of all, the money was too good,” Favre told Deion Sanders on NFL Network. “The money was too good, and I hate to say it’s about money. But, you know, I felt the money was a lot.” |
“I hate to say it was about the money, but I’ve made a shit ton of money, and I know money when I see it. Here? It was a lot of money, money I wasn’t worth, so I took the money, because they were essentially handing out free money to me.”
I would have done the same thing, I suppose, but he’s still an asshole. We’re all in agreement there, right? Not just because he took the money and then ended up sucking and looking old and dead with saggy balls the entire season, but because he also shit all over his teammates essentially.
Ben Leber has that inside scoop:
| “He clearly wasn’t mentally and emotionally into it, and that’s the thing that kind of bugged me,” Leber said. “I get it, you’ve got to make the money when you can make it, even though he has made hundreds of millions of dollars. When he says it’s about the money, it just means that he wasn’t committed to us. So that irritated me a little bit, not for him taking the money, but for what it really meant.” |
Leber also went on to say this:
| “If that’s the case, move on,” Leber said. “I’d rather go with somebody that’s maybe less talented, that’s 100 percent committed to us winning. It bugged me a little bit. I’m not going to say I lost sleep over it, but it bugged me.” |
Now, I agree with that, in theory, but the practice of what the Vikings options were was quite different. Would you rather have a dead to rights Brett Favre out there, committing career suicide and providing an amazing roller coaster of sucktitude, or would you rather have watched TarVar Jackson play like a Muppet and bring an untold level of obscurity to the team? Because at least with Favre ruining everything it was a hilarious shit show of a circus to watch.
Either way, Favre still comes out the villain here, and I wouldn’t ask for it any other way. Him and Brad Childress have likely been the worst things to happen to this franchise in the last 30 years (I’m even counting Wasswa Serwanga here), setting us back to being a group of pillow biters and nail painters. How some Vikings fans ever learned to cheer for that bastard is beyond me. Because you know what he’s doing now? With all his money and accusations of sexual harassment? He’s going zip lining on vacations around the world like a smug asshole:
