Vikings vs. Saints: Mushroom Stamp Winner

In a game where the offense looked as flaccid as your manhood after a night of whiskey, we’re actually awarding this week’s Mushroom Stamp of Disapproval to Captain Munnerlyn.

“WHOA, WAIT A SECOND YOU JERK-FACED VIKINGS FAN HATER, CAPTAIN MUNNERLYN HAD A PRETTY GOOD GAME!” Yes, he did. I am a reasonable enough person to acknowledge that and have a civil conversation with you about his merits as a footballer over a class of single malt and while wearing monocles. However, eat shit, because Captain Munnerlyn still screw us over in this game.

The scores was 13-9, in favor of the Saints. There was about 3:00 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, 18 minutes left in this game overall. Teddy Bridgewater was on the field, the GODFATHER of late game come backs (in the preseason), and the defense had clamped down harder on Drew Brees since the first two drives of the game like they were surprised during their first junior high blow job. We have a chance! This looks good! A four point deficient to the Saints, in the Super Dome, heading into the fourth quarter? I’LL TAKE IT.

And that’s when Mike Zimmer and company decided to call a brilliant third down and 13 blitz, sending in Captain Munnerlyn off the side to drive Drew Brees in the ground. It worked! Brees brought the ball down as he saw Munnerlyn roar towards him from the blind side. He wasn’t throwing anything anywhere. And that was it! The Vikigns defense did their job. They were going to head off the field, and Teddy was going to get the ball back heading into the fourth quarter with a chance to take the lead.

But Captain Stabbin’ wasn’t having it. He wrapped that little drawf up and tossed his ass to the ground, basically suplexing him like this was Monday Night Raw, and some other kind of wrestling reference. That is, of course, something you are not suppose to do by NFL rules. Munnerlyn was called for unnecessary roughness, the Saints got a first down because of it, and then ended up scoring on that same drive to basically put the game out of reach.

Honestly, that was the play that changed the game. The Vikings had a shot – amazingly, they had a shot! – until that penalty was called. And the only reason I’m being so hard on Munnerlyn here is because this penalty was avoidable. You don’t NEED to demolish a quarterback in a situation like that. I get you want to get him on the ground so he can’t do some wrist-flip pass, and I get that as a diminutive cornerback you often have to contort your body to get people down, but body slamming a quarterback in a critical situation? You got to know better than that. That’s all it is.

Hopefully Munnerlyn is still called upon to hit hard like that in the future, and hopefully he remembers this game and just drives through the quarterback rather than face plants him. That would be legit and honest, instead of drawing a penalty and killing a game.

So congratulations Captain! You are awarded this week with a stinking stamp on your forehead. Wear it like a scarlet letter until you learn better. Enjoy!
