This week’s Mushroom Stamp of Approval winner is Captain Munnerlyn, CB for the Minnesota Vikings. But really, it goes to the entire defense.
WHOA, WAIT. The entire defense? You mean the schlubs that gave up 26 points to a terrible Racists team? A team that had an injured quarterback starting, rusty, for the first time in months? AND that defense was going to let said quarterback pass for over 250 yards on them, along with a touchdown and complete 64% of his noodle armed passes against them?
Well, yeah. See, it was Captain Munnerlyn’s fortuitous interception with a minute left in the first half, after the listless Vikings offense again failed to move the ball into scoring range against this Baby Red Potato defense, that turned the tide. For everyone involved, really. Teddy Bridgewater forgot to think too hard, and just decided to throw a touchdown, and then the defense came back out in the second half and had their ass on fire like their just drank a bottle of Sriracha.
When all was said and done, the Vikings finished Week 9 in the NFL with the 4th best defense against the pass in yards per game, the league leading defense in sacks, and still not having to put up with Jared Allen’s bullshit anymore. Overall, I think it’s a pretty good set up, and a strong set of circumstances heading into the bye.
So, solid work, Captain Munnerlyn, on helping the team out to improve their defense. Each week you look less and less like Fred Smooth, and that’s worth something.
