It feels fair that Matt Kalil deserves the poop award this week, right?
Again, I didn’t bother watching this game because I’m an awful fan apparently, OR(!) the outcome was entirely predictable. Either way, as I review the box score and see that third year left tackle, top 10 NFL pick, and double chin fan Matt Kalil had three individual penalties called against him, that can’t be a good sign.
I don’t really have the context for them, though. I would assume the way that fans bitched about his performance on Sunday that he stymied drive after drive. But on his first penalty in the 2nd quarter – an ugly face mask penalty that put the Viking sback 15 yards – the Vikings then went on to score 3 points. Should they have had a touchdown on that drive instead? Maybe, but this is an inept Vikings offense, so I doubt it.
On his next penalty at the start of the 3rd quarter (Great halftime adjustments, BTW), the Vikings ended up going three and out and they had gains of 11, 3, and -7 yards. Would those have been called differently if Kalil didn’t put the offense in a hole early? Probably, but this is a team that is still capable of an -7 yard play (a sack, I don’t know who gave it up, probably Kalil though) that it likely doesn’t matter.
His other penalty in the 4th quarter ended with a Bridgewater to Jennings touchdown, so whatever.
Point being, Matt Kalil is still an awful left tackle. We all know this. He even knows this. Matt Kalil’s hot mother even knows this (probably). But what are we suppose to do 12 weeks into the season? Nothing. So we let him play it out, make a case against himself, then have an “open” competition next year. And then cut him. So, just suffer through it, and continue to poop-stamp your forehead sir. You deserve it!
