Blair Walsh is this week’s Mushroom Stamp of Disapproval winner.
Check this out. In Blair Walsh’s rookie year, 2012, he finished the season with a 92.1% field goal percentage. 92% of the time he was good, all the time. That was 35 out of 38 field goals, with 10 of those attempted AND made were from 50 yards or beyond. That’s impressive, right? 50 yards is a long ways. Hurray! Blair is the man! Best rookie ever!
Well, then 2013 hit. He ended the year then with an 86.7% field goal percentage, 26 of 30, with his 50+ yard attempts sitting at 2 of 5. Alright, not bad. Everyone settle down. 86%? That has to be pretty good still, right? Well ….. 86% put Blair Walsh as the 19th best kicker in the NFL that year. Everyone rated higher than him had at least 25 attempts, too, so it’s not just a weird sample size making him look bad. He actually just looked … Average.
2014? lol. Well. His lofty 78.6% field goal percentage, a statistic of 22 of 28, and 5 out of 7 from 50+ yards, puts Blair this year at 27 out of 32 of the best kickers in the league. Worse kickers include kickers on teams like St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago, and Denver, oddly enough. These are all among “qualifiers” for kicking stats, for whatever that’s worth.
Point being, Jesus Christ Blair, you make one field goal on Sunday and that is a totally different game. A winnable game. I’ll even give you a pass on the 68 yard attempt, which you definitely had the leg for. But the distance hasn’t been the main issue, it’s been the accuracy. So what’s the deal? Bad habits from senior year at Georgia creeping back in? Distracted from all the Mike Priefer business? I don’t know what it is, but someone needs to get their shit together before they become unemployed buddies with a Sparklepony.
