Release or ReSign: Terence Newman

Each week we will be looking at different free agents that the Minnesota Vikings have on the roster. We will look at their strengths, weakness, and how valuable they are to the team. This week will be focusing on:

CB Terence Newman:

Last Season Terence Newman started all 16 games and had three interceptions (two of which were against the Oakland Raiders and those earned him the NFL Defensive Player of the Week. That is a solid season for a 37 year old cornerback whose counterparts are Xavier Rhodes, Captain Munnerlyn, and 11th overall pick Trae Waynes. Newman even made the jump to safety when the Vikings played against the Arizona Cardinals in December.

While it is not likely the Vikings will make the temporary time he spent at safety permanent, it does make him more appealing since that gives the team and Newman options. But if the Vikings kept Newman at his CB position that would give them three experienced players in that role, and it also gives them the chance to work more with the rookie Waynes.

If Newman decided to leave, the Vikings hold in their favor his age. He more than likely would get the same one year deal that he did last season. If he decided to stay he would have to compete against Rhodes, Munnerlyn, and Waynes but if he plays at the level in which he did last season, he will definitely give them a run for their money.

VERDICT: RE-SIGN
