Moritz Boehringer, the German prospect who the Vikings chose in the sixth round of the NFL draft, became the first member of the 2016 draft class to sign a contract.
It’s good that he got that out of the way, because he’s got his work cut out for him to achieve his very lofty goal.
“My ultimate goal is to be the Dirk Nowitzki of the NFL, but it’s a process,’’ Boehringer told the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. “I’ve got to make the team (first).”
There is that small hurdle. Getting past all the hoopla surrounding Boehringer’s status as the first foreign player drafted by the NFL who didn’t play college football in North America, the fact of the matter is he’s a sixth-round draft pick. Players drafted that late don’t always make the team.
It’s a good sign, though, that Boehringer understands that making the team will be a challenge. It shows he’s not caught up in his own hype and is ready to get to work.
