I got in to my apartment right around midnight last night and flipped the Pirates on in time to see that they were tied with the Dodgers 2-2 in the fifth inning. “Nice!” I thought to myself. As soon as I thought that, Matt Kemp singled up the middle and Andre Ethier homered off of Dan McCutchen and the Dodgers took a 4-2. “Damn!” I thought to myself.
At that point, I thought that those two minutes or so were a microcosm of the Pirates’ season; surprising overachievement quickly followed by crushing disappointment. And that was before I found out about all the stranded runners in the first five innings. Did anyone (on the east coast) manage to stay awake for the end of this one? I didn’t even make it to the end, and I’m a grad student that’s always awake.
