Game 22: Pirates 2 Dodgers 0

Did that game really happen? Sometimes West Coast games that start at 10 in the east take on a kind of dreamy quality, but seeing Brian Burres somehow dance through the raindrops for 5 1/3 shutout innings, then Jack Taschner come in and set down eight straight hitters was downright surreal. Seeing Evan Meek pitch a dominant ninth for his first career save was less surreal, but not any less awesome.

On Monday, the Pirates were 7-12 and in the process of closing out one of the most embarrassing weeks in Pirate history in which they dropped seven games by a combined sixty runs. Now, in the wee hours of Friday morning, they’re 10-12 and in third place in the NL Central. What is this team? I’m not afraid to admit that I have no idea. It’s amazing where a few decent starts will get you.
