Game 45: Reds 7 Pirates 5

I feel like I’ve typed “this is what happens when the Pirates get a good start” so many times over and over recently that it’s worth pointing out that losses like this are what happens when the Pirates don’t get a good start. Five runs isn’t a lot for most teams, but it’s a decent amount for the Pirates and so when they score five and were barely even in the game it’s not a great sign. Brian Burres got a mixed bag from the defense tonight (they turned a ton of double plays, but also made some glaring mistakes), but he also didn’t pitch very well with four walks and five hits allowed in less than four innings. It’s gotta be just about time to axe him from the rotation and bring Brad Lincoln up.

Delwyn Young had a nice night at the plate with three hits, including the two-run double in the seventh that made things interesting, but his terrible throw on a routine play is what injured Steve Pearce badly enough to force him out of the game. 19-26, five losses in six games now. Things are sliding away pretty quickly.
