The Pirates and Lincecum

I’m not sure if there’s such thing as a good time to face Tim Lincecum, but if there is it’s probably right now. After starting the season in typically dominant fashion, Lincecum’s walked five hitters in each of his last four starts giving him 20 walks issued in his last 23 1/3 innings. Throw in 21 hits allowed and suddenly Lincecum’s looked mortal, if only because when you put that many people on base some of them have to score. That said, the Pirates’ lineup that doesn’t walk against anyone is probably exactly what Lincecum needs to see right now and if there ever were a team for him to get back on pace against, I would think it would be the Pirates.

The Bucs are countering with Ross Ohlendorf today, and he’s coming off of his best (and really, only good) start of the season against the Cubs last week. After striking out just 15 and walking 18 over 24 2/3 innings in his first five starts, Ohlendorf struck out six and walked just two while allowing only three hits in seven innings against the Cubs on the last day of May. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come for Ohlie and we’ll see more of that pitcher over the rest of the season.

First pitch today is 1:35, Clemente/Cangelosi is after the jump.

Not sure what this is? Check here and here. Short version: in the comments pick the Pirates you think will be most and least valuable in today’s game. If you haven’t jumped aboard yet, it’s been a lot of fun so far and now’s as good a time as any to join in.

There were plenty of Clemente potentials yesterday, with McCutchen, Walker, and Doumit all killing the ball and Paul Maholm turning in a solid start, but Walker and Maholm get the Clemente nods. Walker’s triple in the third inning was the game’s biggest play, in terms of WPA swing, which is why he gets the nod over McCutchen’s four-hit game, and Maholm gets it because that’s what happens when you pitch with a lead and don’t allow a lot of runs. The Cangelosis were Andy LaRoche and Ronny Cedeno, neither of whom could do much of anything at the plate last night save one walk by Cedeno. On such a predictable night (as in, the people that have been playing well played well and the people that haven’t didn’t), no one lost points, though quite a few contestants gained one or two.
