Remember early in the year when the Pirates were winning one and two-run games and losing blowouts? And we said that couldn’t keep up and eventually, the Bucs would lose their share of close games, too? The Pirates haven’t won since last Saturday, and of their seven straight losses, only two have been by four runs or more. Whatever “it” is, it’s caught up to the Bucs.
Today, Jeff Karstens and Armando Galarraga take the mound in the Pirates/Tigers series finale. Karstens had his name put into the history books this year by being the guy that lost to Stephen Strasburg in his big league debut, while Galarraga will forever be remembered as the guy who got screwed out of a no-hitter. I suppose that neither is particularly happy with the small part in baseball lore that fate has carved out for them, but then they’re probably both the sort of pitcher that should just be happy that any part of baseball lore has been carved out for them at all.

Last night’s game is the ultra-rare “all-pitcher” edition of Clemente/Cangelosi, as Paul Maholm got tabbed as the game’s Clemente thanks to only allowing one run over six innings and Joel Hanrahan earned runner-up thanks to two scoreless frames while the game was tied late. The Cangelosis are Evan Meek, who blew the two-run lead with a little help from his friends, and Donnelly, whose -0.357 score on just three pitches may be some kind of record.
Not surprisingly, Maholm was the only guy that earned anyone any points. Actually, he only earned me points, though he cost a few of the big dogs at the top of the standings a point as well. It’s time for me to make my move in the game I semi-invented!
