Last night’s game managed to combine the good (Pedro Alvarez’s first career homer) with some ugly (Paul Maholm’s second awful start out of his last three), and now the Pirates have won four times in six games and still been outscored by a decent margin in those six games. They can still win the series against the Phillies with a win this afternoon, though. If any pitcher will break them out of their recent offensive slump there’s a decent chance that it’ll be Joe Blanton. That will require Jeff Karstens giving them another five solid innings, which always feels like a dicey proposition no matter how many times he does it.

I think I earned myself a Cangelosi yesterday for opening up the July section of posts and forgetting to turn the comments on for them.
