That first update thread was getting long, so I’m tucking it back down below to make the two posts about the Chris Snyder trade (evaluating the deal and ruminating on playing time down the stretch) more accesible. I’ll update this thread this afternoon with any more Pirate trade news and any trades that go down will get their own post.
UPDATE (12:26 ET): Final word on the Snyder trade, via DK, is that Pedro Ciriaco is the minor leaguer from the D’Backs. I don’t know a lot about him, but I don’t think he’s a much better prospect than Argenis Diaz. He hit for some decent averages in 2008 and 2009 in the minors for the D’Backs, but that’s about it.
UPDATE (12:56 ET): FanHouse’s Tom Krasovic, who’s based in San Diego, says there’s “no potential” of a Pirates/Padres Paul Maholm trade today.
UPDATE (1:21 ET): Jen Langosch says the D’Backs are sending the Pirates $3 million in the Snyder trade, which covers a big chunk of the $5.75 million he’s owed next year.
UPDATE (2:32 ET): The much-discussed Ted Lilly to the Dodgers trade has gone through. I’d agree with everyone speculating that it should mean that LA has no remaining interest in Paul Maholm. Pretty much only the Mets are left of the team’s I’ve heard Maholm connected to, though obviously something could be happening behind the scenes.
UPDATE (2:36 ET): Jayson Stark says the Pirates are telling teams that they don’t feel they have to trade Octavio Dotel today.
UPDATE (3:21 ET): DK says no Maholm trade today, which isn’t a surprise at this point. A Dotel deal may still be possible.
UPDATE (3:34 ET): DK says Pirates may be “on the verge” of trading Javier Lopez. I don’t really think the Pirates can get much for him in return, but teams do sometimes get desperate for lefty relievers at the break. Stay tuned, and remember that sometimes it taks a half hour for news to leak out after the deadline.
UPDATE (3:46 ET): Andrew Baggarly, a Giants beat writer, Tweets Javier Lopez is going to San Francisco for Joe Martinez. This is Joe Martinez. Here’s my post on the trade, which is below this one.
UPDATE (3:58 ET): And just like that, Dotel’s gone, too, to LA for “Lamb and McDonald.” Presumably that’s James McDonald and I don’t know who because there is no “Lamb” in the Dodgers system. Maybe Andrew Lambo.
