Well, well, look who’s leading the Arizona Fall League in home runs. It’s Andrew Lambo and Tony Sanchez (and Derek Norris and Dustin Ackley and Eduardo Escobar)! The AFL is always pretty hitter-friendly, but it’s good to see these two do some hitting for various reasons. They’re both pretty young to be in the AFL and Sanchez, having not played above High-A is probably at least a notch below most of the guys that get picked to go to Arizona. They both had some problems during the 2010 season, Lambo adjusting to Double-A and Sanchez with his injuries, and so it’s good to see that they’re bouncing back and being productive.
Sanchez’s batting average is a little low, but he’s got a bunch of things to work on and given the sample size and the presence of players from all walks of minor league life, AFL stats are rarely reliable predictors. Still, remember that Donnie Veal had a great stint in Arizona last year and had some continued success with Indianapolis before his injury.
