As I was watching the MLB Network broadcast of the 1960 World Series, news broke that Bob Feller had died. Feller’s last pitch came 29 years before I was born, but I feel like I can’t let his death go unmentioned. My grandfather grew up just outside of Toledo as an Indians’ fan and Bob Feller was his favorite player. To this day, he’s still got a copy of the team picture of the 1948 Indians hanging in his basement with one bright blue signature on it; Bob Feller’s. That’s the same basement that I used to spend hours in as a kid, playing game after game against my grandfather with huge deck of old school Cadaco spinner cards built up across the decades, talking about the great players of the past. Given that during my lifetime Feller was best known for not letting people forget about baseball’s great history, I kind of think he’d like that story.
As always, Joe Posnanski’s take on Feller is fantastic. If you haven’t yet, I’d recommend you check it out.
