A brief interlude

I’m giving lab meeting tomorrow morning, which means that instead of spending the day wondering if there’s anything hidden inside Charlie Morton’s performance over the last year, I instead spent it wondering what I’ve been doing since October. I did, however, manage churn out what’s turned out to be the most popular tweet in the 6,000+ message history of the WHYGAVS twitter account. Was it about baseball? Or the Pirates? Kind of. Actually, it was mostly about Jeopardy.

whygavs jennings twitterFor the record, I thought Watson was really impressive but that it had an unfair advantage being fed the clues via text file and being able to queue up the automatic buzzer to ding it at the first possible split-second. I suspect the game would’ve been much closer if the machine had to process the clues in auditory fashion the way mortals do. We can teach a machine to learn the nuances of Jeopardy, but speech to text recognition is apparently still difficult. Also, it would’ve gotten rocked if Trebek had the balls to include a Before and After category.
