This is a particularly hard game for me to recap. What I know about it is this: 1.) James McDonald walked more hitters than he struck out, which is something that I almost always consider a negative and 2.) I got a bunch of twitter messages about the Pirates going on a bunting spree, which is obviously something that I probably wouldn’t have been too excited about, had I been watching.
And yet, I see the box score and I see that the Giants didn’t score at all and the bullpen was great again and heck, Brandon Wood drew another walk (with two walks in three games as a Pirate, he’s just four below his career high) and I find it hard to write something that would be construed as negative. I like how this Pirate team has played through 24 games — ridiculous bunting patterns aside — and I don’t want to be mistaken as the massively negative guy that hates everything the Pirates do.
I like the players and will continue to maintain that they’re at least a little better than people realize. I just hate awful baseball strategy.
