Credit where credit is due

Clint Hurdle on Brandon Wood’s decision to try and take third last night: 

He tried to push a play, and he’s already in scoring position,” Hurdle said. “The Angels are aggressive when it’s in the dirt, and we play that way, too. But there are times you have to be smart. When you make an out at third base in that situation, it never looks good. That’s not what you’re looking for.”

Why that was worse than McCutchen trying to score on a pointless sac fly, I’m not sure, but since I’m hard on Hurdle when he calls for stupid things, it’s only fair that I note when he doesn’t. 

Now, why he only used Crotta and Beimel with the game on the line last week …
