Here’s what you need to know about this game: The Diamondbacks threw 162 pitches with 108 going for strikes, but the Pirates somehow only managed four walks and five hits and didn’t score a run in this game. They worked every count deep, they hit a ton of foul balls, and nothing happened for them.
Jeff Karstens pitched well for the Bucs. He cruised through seven four-hit innings on just 79 pitches, but had to be pulled with a runner on second and one out in the bottom of the seventh of a 0-0 game. Chris Resop, who was excellent last night, couldn’t get out of the top of the eighth and gave up a two-run homer to Chris Young and that was it.
It always sucks to shrug and say, “You can’t win ’em all,” but it seems crazy to me that the Pirates saw as many pitches as they did tonight with such little success. Luck wasn’t on their side in this one, I guess.
