Yesterday is yesterday

As fun and exciting as yesterday’s win was, the baseball season stops for no one and if the Pirates are going to keep pace with the first place Brewers and Cardinals, they’re going to need another win tonight against the Cubs. Kevin Coreia, who could be named to the All-Star team tomorrow as the the replacement for Cole Hamels since he was next in line in the player’s vote, starts for the Bucs and will try to record his 12th. His mound opponent tonight is Ryan Dempster, who’s having a pretty rough year. He can still rack up the strikeouts, though, and that sort of pitcher sometimes has success against the Pirates no matter how poorly they seem to be pitching.

There’s one big piece of transation news to mention today: the Pirates activated Pedro Alvarez from the disabled list today and immediately optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he’s been rehabbing. Since Pedro had a few days left on his rehab clock it’s awfully surprising to see him optioned now; I’m going to write a little bit more about this after tonight’s game.

First pitch tonight is at 7:05. A Pirate win coupled with a Brewer loss ties the Buccos for first place.
