This is one of those games that there would be plenty of good things to find, but there’s plenty of bad things to off-set them. Four runs off of Cliff Lee is a great for the Pirates, but giving up seven runs isn’t a good way for them to beat anyone. Pedro Alvarez’s home run off of Lee was a great thing to see, but his strikeout against Antonio Bastardo in the eighth probably ended any chance the Pirates had of winning this game.
There’s just not a whole lot else to say here. For the second straight night, the Pirates got a substandard pitching from a starter and were forced to battle uphill against one of the National League’s better starters. With or without Derrek Lee, there’s not a whole lot the Pirates are going to be able to do when that happens.
The Bucs really, really need a win tomorrow to avoid a sweep. That’s the only thing worth focusing on right now.
