In the last two games the Pirates have played, the winning pitchers have been Dana Eveland and Brian Burres. It’s really hard to get excited about this sort of baseball with the way the Pirates have been playing. On the bright side, they won yesterday because Alex Presley’s bat is heating up again. He started off slowly in his return from the DL, but now he’s got five hits in his last two games, including two triples and a homer. Seeing him do this for another month would be pretty great.
Game 2 of this Pirates/Cubs series pits Ross Ohlendorf against Casey Coleman. Ohlendorf had a nice start against Houston last time out, but I’d obviously like to see him have a nice start against someone that isn’t the Astros. I don’t know who Casey Coleman is. I literally became aware of his existence seconds ago when I clicked the link on MLB.com to see who “C. Coleman” was. Which means this guy is destined to dominate the Pirates this afternoon.
Most importantly for the Pirates, Andrew McCutchen is back in the lineup today after being hit on the wrist with a pitch yesterday and coming out of the game. There was some real concern that it was a serious injury and the fact that it’s not is literally the most important news the Pirates can possibly get this month. Derrek Lee is also back in the lineup, which is kind of surprising, but I guess he’s playing for a free agent contract somewhere.
First pitch is at 1:05. Y’know, right as college football is heating up for the day.
