Here’s a way to waste your whole weekend

Over at The Hardball Times, Dan Brooks writes about the inherent problems with PitchFX and how he managed to solve some of them with Harry Pavlidis and Lucas Apostoleris: by hand-tagging each of the 3.5 million pitches thrown since PitchFX was instituted in Major League ballparks.

The result is these amazing player cards, which include tons of data sortable just about any way you’d like. For example, you can sort through Charlie Morton’s data to figure out why he struggled so much with lefties last year. You can be certain that I’ll have some posts up using this new tool in the coming weeks, but if you’re interested in this sort of thing I’d seriously encourage you to play around with it a bit on your own, just to see the incredible amount of work that went into it.
