The Pirates trimmed their spring training roster down to 48 today with a bunch of moves that were mostly expected save for maybe one. Heading to minor league camp today are Jeff Locke, Rudy Owens, Duke Welker, Mike Crotta, Logan Kensing, Tony Sanchez, Ramon Cabrera, Robbie Grossman, Anderson Hernandez, and the one big surprise, Chase d’Arnaud. Neal Huntington told Michael Sanserino that d’Arnaud was demoted because they want him to play every day and that accordingly he’s not in competition for the open utility spot.
Sanserino is also reporting that Sanchez will really have to impress in minor league camp to avoid heading back to Altoona to start 2012, which is something that was mostly expected after his terrible 2011. I know I read at least one story this spring where Clint Hurdle raved about his defense, which was something that had people concerned a little bit last year, so hopefully it’ll be a short stay in Altoona while he gets his career back on track.
