With Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry and Doc Rivers all taking the day off (well, Doc was sort of taking the day off… he was up in Maine watching his son Jeremiah and the Red Claws), the new guys got a lot of work in during practice.
“Doc has contacted everyone, we know what he wants to run, what we have to do as far as the offense, defense, running through plays and repetition,” said assistant coach Armond Hill, tasked with Rivers’ unenviable media responsibilities. “We’re trying to get the young guys, the new guys to understand what we’re looking for in a play. And repetition is the only way, so we have to keep going over and over and over.
“Everybody’s going to be here, we’ll go through some shooting drills, go through our drills. [Rivers] wants to rest KG, Paul, and JET, then everyone else goes through the practice.”
This little lull in the schedule is perfectly timed. With so many new faces, a few days off to get some practice reps in will help these guys fill in when Doc rests Pierce and Garnett. They won’t learn everything, but they’ll learn enough to get by and help.
Some of these guys might not get off the bench much… but I’m not sure what people expect from these 10-day contract guys. I don’t understand why I keep hearing “when is Doc going to play these guys?”
They are here for insurance. Instead of the bench, they should be sitting in a box labeled “break glass in case of emergency.” Jordan Crawford will get the most minutes right now… Terence Williams will get more as he learns plays… and DJ White and Shavlik Randolph might be mostly relegated to towel waving duty.
The added reps today and tomorrow will help, but most of these guys won’t get much time no matter what.
