Overreaction Sunday: Change Is In the Air

Hello Followers.

Hope you’ve had a good week.

As for me, well, I got a little angry last night at the state of affairs of our little Cougar Football Program. And so, I got in a bit of trouble.

Overreaction Sunday: Change Is In the Air
Want to know what conclusions I reached after a night in “the kitchen.”

Then read on.

Followers, last night was EXACTLY what I expected. I mean, how is 43-7 different than the 38-9 pasting that I predicted? Not much, right?

But, even when you know that something bad is going to happen, that doesn’t mean that it feels any better when it actually happens.

And so now we have reached a critical crossroads for the program.  And, despite the fact that no one wants to see this staff fail, IT IS NOW TIME FOR JIM STERK AND FLOYD TO MANDATE CHANGES IN THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM.

The reasons for this absolute need for change are as follows.

1) The Current Recruiting Approach Isn’t Working. Granted, when you look at the skill position guys we have, there is optimisim that someday these kids may be good. But, this isn’t basketball folks: If you’re going to compete in football, you need to have competence at least 18  of the 22 positions on the field, not including special teams. Right now, we’re on course to be decent at about 11 positions–IN ABOUT 3 YEARS.

As a result, WSU NEEDS TO INFUSE JC TALENT INTO THE PROGRAM starting about 8 weeks ago. And I’m not talking infusing more talent into this class, I’m talking about the next three. Simply put, in order to turn this around, we have got to build some sense of competence within our ranks. And, getting TORCHED for the next three seasons isn’t going to do that.

To quote Wulff: “Everything about our program is going fine except for Saturdays.” Uh, well, Pauly, the reason why that is the case is because our boys are playing against BAD football players every day outside of Saturday.  And bringing more newbees in just ain’t going to change that fact in time to save the program and YOUR JOB.

2) The current staff isn’t cutting the mustard. Followers, everyone knows that we have NO Pac-10 talent on this team. Intead, we have a hodge-podge of MWC and WAC wanna-bees. So, sure, it makes sense that we would not be able to compete week in and out in the Pac with lesser talent. But do you think that it’s too much to ask for us to actually improve enough to become a MID-LEVEL WAC team?

Because, followers, NO ONE CAN TELL ME THAT OUR GUYS ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY FOR IDAHO. But, what is really disturbing to me is that, right now, there is NO WAY that we could play with Idaho.

So again, to be clear, I am not looking for right now is NOT for us to play with any Pac-10 team. What I am looking for is improvement–e.g. to have three or four halves a year where we’re down by less than 28 at the half.

Because lets face it, OTHER TEAMS ARE PUTTING 35 POINTS OR SO ON OUR FIRST STRING DEFENSE WHEN OUR GUYS ARE FRESH! Its beyond pathetic.

But, like we’ve talked about before, A HUGE part of our defensive problems relates to our offense–a group that can’t even get first downs let alone touchdowns. If our O-Line coach and Todd Sturdy survive this year, it will be a bloody stinking crime.

3) Take off the Loyalty Hat, Mr. Wulff. Yesterday, following the humiliating 55-21 defeat from the Trees, Pete Carrol blamed the entire debacle on himself. And good for him.

But deep down, you know he’s going to hang a few of his assistants and coordinators from their fingernails.

Wulff is a loyal guy, and that is to his credit. But there’s also this thing called BLIND LOYALTY which can quickly become a character flaw.

Floyd and Sterk must call for the removal of at least most of our offensive coaching staff (with the exception of Levy) as well as some of our other positions as well. If Wulff balks at that, then WULFF MUST BE FIRED.

And yes, I know we don’t have the money. But, when you don’t have anyone in the stands, you can’t afford to keep the current guy either.

And nation, we’re looking at 1 win all over again next year. Bank on it.
