WSU Recruiting Down the Stretch

WSU Recruiting Down the Stretch

With signing day next week, it’s down-the-stretch-they-come time, isn’t it?  And there’s a lot of news and stuff to get to, so, here…we…go.

Did ya SEE the Youtube video of the latest commit, defensive end/tight end Kalifatoni Pole??  Holy TOLEDO what a highlight reel!  Words can’t fully explain it, so, check it out here….you’ll be glad you watched it.

The kid is a highlight machine, both on the d-line and with real athleticism at tight end.  He looks like a super athlete, with the ever-popular “high-motor” description you see pretty much everywhere right now.  Seriously, that has to be one of the most overused quotes these days in describing recruits.  NO WAY that all these kids bring it every down!  Don’t many of them, at some point, take a “few plays off”?  Just saying.

Now, obviously you have to wonder about the level of the competition he was going against in that tape.  Let’s face it, some of those offensive linemen he was dominating, well, they don’t look like D-I prospects to my eyes, you know what I mean?  Anyway, whatever the case the kid jumps off the highlight reel with big play, after big play, after big play.

Pole was/is a bit of an under-the-radar type, where he really hadn’t been evaluated by the major recruiting services (Scout.com with just the proverbial 1-star rating, meaning he wasn’t evaluated, while Rivals.com didn’t have anything on him as well).  Pole was heavily in the mix with Utah, and as Rivals reported in their story of his commitment, ASU wanted him to come for a visit late in the process.  But in the end, coach Wulff and the rest were able to get his commitment.

Read on for other stuff out there…..

The Cougs are reportedly still in good shape on David Mahoney, the JC defensive tackle who was a hard lean towards Tennessee before Lane Kiffin bolted for LA.  As last reported by Cougfan, Mahoney had a “really good in-home visit” with coach Wulff, last week….which is good?  The rumor is that Mahoney has a leader right now, and the speculation is that it is in fact WSU.  But, he’s going to take one last trip to another school before next week.  We’ll see what happens, but the Cougs have just as good a shot as any other school on his list right now.

There is a fresh rumor making the rounds, and this one is a bit of a surprise.  Bellevue defensive tackle Julious Moore, a UCLA commitment all along, has suddenly changed things up and is back out there looking at schools, per Realdawg.com.  And as the “free” part of the headline indicates, Moore is visiting a northwest school this weekend, and at last word, it is NOT UW.  And, per a chat from Bob Condotta at the Seattle Times, the cat is out of the bag in terms of the school he’s tripping to this weekend….

[Comment From Reggie]What ar either of you hearing in regard to Julious Moore and the fact that he may not be able to get into UCLA?

Bob Condot
ta: I don’t know much first-hand on that situation. But there are reports that he won’t be able to enroll immediately at UCLA and that the Bruins would apparently like him to grayshirt. However, he may have an easier time getting into some other schools and I know that RealDawg.com is reporting that he will take a visit to Washington State this weekend. UW, as we have mentioned, already has 29 commitments and in the running for a few other pretty big-ticket guys. They may not have room for Moore.

Hmmmmm.  Who knows, but maybe this could turn into another Michael Bumpus situation?

Remember the Bumpus story?  Bumpus was all set to go to USC, but at the last moment, Pete Carroll’s crew was able to get top-rated WR Dwayne Jarrett to switch his commitment from Ohio State to USC.  When that happened, Carroll asked Bumpus to delay his enrollment and greyshirt at SC, enrolling the next year.  Instead of following that last-minute plan, Bumpus quickly visited WSU and surprised everyone when his letter of intent showed up on signing day!  It worked out pretty well for little ‘ol WSU, didn’t it?

Anyway, Moore is a 3-star defensive tackle, rated #40 in the country at his position.  Not a huge guy at 6-0, 255, he’s strong with a reported 330 bench, 510 squat and a 28-inch vertical leap.  And as Scout.com reports, he’s got a bit of a “smallish” frame.  However, he is pretty athletic and….wait for it….possesses a “non-stop motor”.

Well, whatever happens with any of these guys, the central theme here is great – it appears the Cougs at the last minute are getting set to add some real promise along the defensive line as of next week!

That’s it for now.  GO COUGS!
