A VENOYING Loss

Well, tonight our Cougs faught valiantly back from a 14 half deficit and then faded in the last five minutes to lose 59-52.

I almost enjoyed how hard both teams played tonight, until the jersey popping, tongue wagging crap started.  Oh well.

A couple of notes:

MVP of the Game:  Venoy Overton.  I said in the pre-game that I thought that X and Moore were keys for us tonight.  Well, tonight Overton absolutely schooled Moore all over the court.  All night we ran our offense from near the half court line or were completely out of control driving to the basket.  Overton was responsible for all of that.  He was simply magnificent defensively–the type of guy we would LOVE if he were a Cougar (minus some of the extra-curricular crap.)

Cougar MVP.  Casto played wonderfully and he certainly deserves TONS of kudos. But, this game belonged to Nik.  And boy did he do a FABULOUS job on Q.  FABULOUS.  If you saw Nik’s defensive discipline, it really makes you miss the Bennets.  Great job to both kids, but Nik made an NBA first rounder out of control WHEN HE HAD SPACE.  We’ll miss you, Nik.

Running in Klay.  What can you say?  Lots of Klay’s shots tonight were out of control. Others were good looks that didn’t fall.  The bottom line is that he looks like Barry Bonds used to in the post-season.  He just has the yips.  He’ll break out of it, but the thing I’m noticing is that his release is getting slower–you don’t see him jab-step and pop like he should.  It’ll come, but until it does, we’re gonna lose.

The Great Cougar Caper(s).  We’ve got three more games left in the year.  Besides getting Klay back on track, we need to get a role for Marcus.  As I’ve noted before, I think he might be a good player to bring off the bench.  The other option: have him run the point more and take a wing away from the basket.  But, clearly, he has gotten to the point where he’s almost like a 5 playing on the perimeter:  Everytime he catches the ball, he wants to get rid of it immediately. And, to be a good team, you need some offense out of the wing.  And we have none right now when he’s in the game.

So, on we go to the Oregon schools.  Lets hope our kids find something to hold onto on the last week of the season.

As is, we have firmly placed ourselves in the cellar.
