So, are you ready for some football? Coug football? Tomorrow late afternoon, it’s ON. As fast and fleeting as this summer was in the pacific northwest, I have to say it’s a great thing to see actual NCAA football again.
Anyone check out the USC game last night? Hawaii couldn’t stop the Trojan O in the 49-36 loss, but wow, did SC’s defense look a little, uh, unimpressive?? Ted Miller mentioned it in his instant analysis, but yeah, SC’s D deserved an “F” for this one. 588 yards allowed!? Unfathomable. But maybe it goes to show the old rule of how there is always an adjustment period when you start over with a bunch of new starters and new coaches, especially offensive and defensive coordinators. Yeah, it’s one game, and SC has dealt with a truckload of stuff this offseason, so maybe they weren’t “all in” just yet. But still, there is no way I would have ever thought Hawaii would move the ball that well vs. the vaunted men of Troy.
Moving on, one thing that has been asked and/or mentioned around here is who, exactly, is heading down to Stillwater? We have heard from a few of you via email and also in comments, but here’s a few details:
Tim in Oklahoma had this to say:
“The Oklahoma Coug alums, led by Cameron McCoy, will be set up, tailgate-style, alongside Eskimo Joe’s, Stillwater’s world-famous “Jumpin’ Little Juke Joint,” where they behave very much like a bunch of Cougs and then walk to the stadium two blocks away. This is gonna be fun!
B-Lot from Cougar Athletic Supporter is heading down for the game, and had this to say on how to locate their tailgate:
“We’ll be tailgating in Stillwater. Look for the WSU flag and pirate flag somewhere near the stadium. The B-Lot will be well represented. “
If you are heading down there, feel free to leave a comment about where you might be and we’ll pass it along. Hey, we’ve all been to road games, and while it’s fun to mingle with the enemy, the more Cougs that can meet up on the road the better!
Moving on…
The videogame dork in me ran the old EA Super Sim, where the Cougs and Pokes got it on in NCAA Football ’11.
It was an exciting game, but OK State won, 31-23. The Pokes would race to a 31-7 third quarter lead before Tuel brought them back with some fourth-quarter TD’s, but it wasn’t enough. WSU would actually outgain OK State, 452-426, and young Tuel would throw for 358 yards and 3 TD’s with no interceptions as he spread the ball around to seven different receivers. But Brandon Weeden was almost as good, throwing for 291 and 3 TD’s of his own. Kendall Hunter added 113 rushing yards and a TD on the ground. But it was all about the turnovers, as the Cougs lost two first-half fumbles that led to OK State TD’s, and that was all she wrote. But hey, let’s hope life imitates videogame dorkness and this one is within a TD or so!
In other EA Super Sim action:
BYU 28, UW 25 – Locker throws for 351 and a score, and Chris Polk ran for 141 yards in a back-and-forth contest. But BYU would total 514 yards of offense, as junior QB Riley Nelson tossed three TD passes. UW was in it until the end, as a costly 4th quarter interception ends Husky hopes for their first road win since ’07.
TCU 35, Oregon State 21 – This one seemed a little too high-scoring, at least compared to what many expect. TCU outgained the Beavs 463-387, led by TCU’s Andy Dalton throwing four TD’s. QB Ryan Katz was solid in his starting debut, throwing for 224 yards and a TD. Quizz Rodgers had 144 yards rushing, including a 55-yd TD run, but the Beavs just didn’t have enough O to keep up.
Back on planet earth – Howie Stalwick reports on Bill Moos and his desire for more TV money for WSU. In fact, the TV money is so vital that Moos says the following when asked about equal shares of the TV pie:
And on a possible divisional alignment that could see the Cali schools banding together in the “Pac-12 South” division, Moos added that he is uncertain how that is going to go. A lot was made of the Jon Wilner story from a couple of days ago, where there are rumors of the Cali schools banding together to swing the big stick, asking to be in the same division with the AZ schools.
I guess we should just wait and see how it all plays out. Would it suck to not have some sort of Cali presence? Sure. Whether it was the “zipper” proposal of splitting the conference right down the middle for the most part, or a north-south split with the Bay Area schools in the north, you would hope that the fertile recruiting state of California would be a regular part of any football schedule. But it sounds that IF they can promise the NW schools an equal share of the TV money that is coming down the pike, and a concession can be made that would guarantee a game in the Bay Area as well as one of the LA schools – basically what is in place now, where as a NW school you play one Bay Area and one LA school – then so be it. Money is the bottom line here, period.
Finally, way way WAY out there, but have you seen the latest Photoshop craziness with Leo DiCaprio and Michael Cera?? We have “Strutting Leo” and “Prancing Cera” making the rounds, and wow, there’s some serious Photoshop talent out there! (note – the URL’s for the Strutting Leo and Prancing Cera links have a bad word in them. Be warned…)
The “Strutting Leo” pic was snapped on the set of Inception last year, where he was screwing around between takes.
And of course, the inevitable happened – Photoshop gold!
And then you have Prancing Cera. This photo was taken of Michael Cera on the set of Scott Pilgrim.
More Photoshop gold:
A LOT of talented people with way too much time on their hands, don’t you think?
All for now. Enjoy your Friday, and as always, GO COUGS!
