Rejoice Coug fans, College football is finally here! This is the BEST time of year and I can barely concentrate on anything else because I am so excited for all the crazy stuff that is going to happen over the next 18 Saturdays. To me there is no sport in the world that holds a candle to College Football and even though the Cougs have left a lot to be desired on the grid iron recently, I still welcome the Fall like a five-year-old who can’t wait for Christmas. Thanks to the wonders of the interwebs, blogs, forums, etc., I can now indulge my obsession like never before and completely geek out on ALL THINGS College Football. Since some of you who read our lil ol blog MUST be like me, I thought I’d share a bit of my annual ritual of ringing in the new season by paying homage to the great traditions of the game I love. With some help from our friends at Youtube, lets all just kick back, crack a cold one and geek out together by enjoying some of the fine video offerings that help define our shared passion for this hallowed game.
This year the mighty Buckeyes of the Ohio State University are favorites to win the Big 10 and a popular pick for the National Championship. While not a Buckeye fan myself, I have to tip my hat to them for maintaining one of the most profound and stirring traditions in football… Script Ohio and dotting the i. This video really does the tradition justice with a nice narrative from the lucky sousaphone player who gets the honor of being the dot. Enjoy…

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PymIQ3BuNYA&w=425&h=344]Awesome. Moving on, there is another storyline in the Big 10 this year. Not a new one, but one that has been repeated every year since 1966. Joe Paterno, or “Joe Pa”, will enter his 45th season as head coach of Penn State. It has been the most storied of storied careers and quite frankly, Joe Pa is College Football. This montage appeared on TV a couple years ago and I DARE YOU not to get a bit misty as you watch this stirring tribute to a lovable legend…
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQDlaWFeilE&w=425&h=264]Gimme a second. Ok, I’m ready to continue. Next up I want to take you to a place that used to be a regular destination for all College Football fans on Saturdays in the Fall, Lincoln Nebraska. A lot of us grew up watching the corn-fed juggernaut option express roll its way through opponent after opponent, year after year. The Blackshirt defense, the perennial Heisman candidates at QB… Corn Husker football was a machine. Well the folks in Lincoln think this year marks a return to glory, and they produced this great video to let you know they are serious…
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5D_jQVG40o&w=425&h=264]Our neighbors the Vandals and, of course the Dawgs, both get to find out just how serious they are this season.
Finally, I gotta pay homage to our very own Cougs. Its hard to imagine now, but not too long ago we went into EVERY game expecting to win. If you can’t remember what that felt like here is a little help…

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJMrsPQCqIM&w=425&h=344]Ok, if you aren’t ready for college football now, check your pulse.
It’s almost game day, where are you watching? For those of you in the Seattle area you can meet the one and only Go To Guy, Jim Moore who will be at Performance Grill in Auburn, WA, 1525 A Street NE, from 3:00 to 7:30 pm (or if the Cougs win, until closing time!) with 710 ESPN Seattle. This is a new Westside Cougar hangout brought to you by Matt Baker, former owner of the Village Pub in Magnolia. Sounds like a good time!
If you live on the Palouse you’ll find me camped out at the Sports Page, hoping we get to TURN THE HELMET baby!
Until then, viva College Football and GO COUGS!
