I have to again apologize for the low-quality of the shots. They are screen grabs from channelsurfing.net, and the quality leaves something to be desired. But at least it’s evidence that the flags flew on Gameday, yet again!
Finally, there are two bits of very interesting audio for your consumption. First, former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach hopped on with Ian Furness at KJR, and had some good things to say about WSU. If you haven’t heard, Leach will be doing the color commentary for the WSU – SMU game today on CBS College Sports.
It sure sounds like Leach wants back in to coaching, doesn’t it? You know what I was surprised to hear was how Leach never had a losing season at Tech, and took the Red Raiders to 10 straight bowl games, sporting an 84-43 record overall. In a conference with traditional powers like Texas, Nebraska and Oklahoma, his record is awfully impressive. Yeah, he’s a weird guy with the whole pirates thing, and his firing was extremely controversial, and parts of Leach’s lawsuit are still ongoing. But it’s hard to argue with his results, and finding a way to win consistently in Lubbock, all the while going up against the “big boys”.
The other bit of audio worth your while today is from ESPN radio in Seattle, KIRO 710. Dave Grosby and Ray Roberts have Bert Klasey, WSU blogger from MyNorthwest.com, called in to talk Cougs. By the way, did you know Bert happens to be a co-producer on the excellent new A&E show called Hoarders?? Cool. That show is disturbingly amazing I have to say. If you haven’t checked out Bert’s stuff, you can see his blog here.
Anyway, they talk Cougs, but then later on in the audio, listen to Ray Roberts talk about Paul Wulff. Per Roberts, who heard Wulff speak at a seminar this spring? Wulff doesn’t have “THAT THING” about him that made you think “here’s a coach that is going to turn around a program.” Before you slam Roberts, remember that Ray has been around the block quite a bit. He was an All-American at Virginia, he was a first-round NFL draft pick who had a long professional career, and he’s recently been a high school coach. He has absolutely no “horse in this race”, so no, he’s not out to kill WSU/Paul Wulff. His view is completely unbiased. But wow, it pretty much sucks to hear that.
If you are reading this, you probably already know that for the most part Wulff isn’t a dazzler on the podium. He’s getting better, and is definitely more comfortable on his radio show with Bud Nameck or during WSU functions, where he is among Coug fans. But what sucks is the losing, obviously, but then you hear that he’s criticized for just not having that impressive presence from a member of the media? I know, I know, if we were winning games and going to bowl games it probably wouldn’t matter. And today’s day and age, whether you love it or hate it, winning the podium can be awfully important. Fair or not, it’s the era of media that we live in, where the head coach is the face of your program. But, well, here we are.
That’s about it for now. We’ll have a post up after the game. Enjoy it, and as always, GO COUGS!
