Well, today, the Cougs played until the final minute, falling to the Cal Bears 20-13.
If you were able to watch you the game, you probably have the same sick feeling that I do.
Cuz, lets face it folks. If we were going to win a Pac-10 game this year, today was the opportunity to do it.
Unfortunately, despite the fact that the defense played well and Furney established himself as the FG kicker of the future, the offense’s inability to move the ball ultimately proved fatal in this one. All day, Tuel was running for his life–a situation that was exacerbated by our seeming unwillingness to establish any type of running game.
Our failure to even try to run was magnified by the fact that our only touchdown drive was facilitated almost exclusively through the run. But in spite of that, we continued to try to stretch the field throughout the whole game, while CAL’s relentless pass rush made such a strategy prohibitive.
Moreover, key moments in the game were determined by penalties–many of which were simply inexplicable. While I tally some of those mistakes up to youth, I am not sure that those mistakes will hold water with Moos given that this was the 10th game of our season.
In short, when you combine those “stupid” mistakes with Wullf’s decision to punt on fourth down with two minutes left (and add to that the stupidity of throwing deep on 1st and 2nd down from our 15 on that final drive), you have some serious fodder for the “get rid of the coach” talk that we have seen for some time now.
And with the injuries mounting at the same time that our confidence is surely to deflate, it is easy to see where we’re headed: December 6th.
The era of Paul Wulff is soon to come to an end.
