New Year, New Era, New Writers

Whew, so how ’bout those Stanford Cardinal?  After seeing all the ESPN wonks pick Va-Tech before the game, and a tight first half at that, I’m sure a lot of people were walking around going “This is a top five team?  They aren’t so great…..”

But after witnessing the second half domination that saw Stanford score four second half TD’s, to zero for the Hokies?

“….Oh.”

Yeah, see, Stanford, they are REALLY good.  And they showed it all last night, in how they are truly one poor half of football in Oregon away from being an unbeaten juggernaut.  Kind of makes you feel a little better from a Coug perspective that we somehow “only” lost by 10, 38-28 in Palo Alto??

Anyway, today, the story is how everyone loves Jimmy Harbaugh.  San Francisco, Denver, Carolina in the NFL, Michigan in the NCAA.  But ask yourself, who wouldn’t want this guy at the helm of their team right now, college or pro?  He’s still got youth on his side, still in his 40’s (47).  He’s got energy, enthusiasm, charisma out the ying-yang, showing an ability to recruit anyone, anywhere in the country with Stanford.  And oh yeah, the man is a winner.  To take a program from 1-11 to 12-1 in four years is simply amazing, but it’s completely legit.  This has absolutely no feeling of fly-by-night, fleeting success.  A deep, talented team built on excellent play up front and a physical, tough style is something to be admired far and wide, and Harbaugh and his staff are the ones who built it.

Where he goes from here will be incredibly interesting to watch.  And from a WSU P-O-V?  As long as it’s outta the Pac-12 North, we’ll take it!  🙂  If I had to predict, I think the lure of going back to the NFL is going to be too strong, and he is going to choose the pro ranks over staying in college.  And what better place to set up shop than Carolina, where oh yeah, have the number one pick where you can continue a long, happy relationship with Andrew Luck beginning with the #1 pick in the draft??

I heard on ESPN radio the other day some scouts have been absolutely blown away by what they have seen out of Luck.  From a hack like me he’s really impressive, able to do pretty much everything.  But to the scouts, it’s not just the arm strength or the poise or the body, or even the brain.  It’s the entire package that scouts claim they just haven’t seen, not like this.  Some even say he’s at a higher level than even the great Peyton Manning was when he was coming out of college.  And Harbaugh himself told Colin Cowherd over the summer that Andrew Luck is the best QB he has ever seen.  When asked if he meant at the college level or what, Harbaugh said “no….the best I’ve EVER seen.”  Wow.  So if he goes to Carolina, he has the chance to keep coaching up the best QB he’s ever seen?  That’s going to be a hard situation to say no to.  But we’ll see!  It’s going to be fascinating to watch over the coming days.

Moving on, some of you may be wondering what the deal is with our open tryouts on the new writers we want to add to our staff.  First, let me say that this was, without a doubt, an incredibly difficult decision.  Believe it or not, we received over 40 inquiries from people who were very serious about joining the team.  To some of you that may not sound like a lot, but that’s from people who have a real passion for this thing we call WSU football, and they all showed some ability to write about what they love.  Trust me, it’s hard to say no to anyone on something like this, I mean it is just a blog!  But there was no way we could add everyone.  It was hard enough just to whittle it down to five finalists, and then after they all posted their tryout posts, it made it even more difficult!  But we had to move forward, and in the end, we’ve decided on three excellent new contributors that you will be seeing around here, sooner rather than later.

It is with great pleasure that we at WSU Football Blog announce that Tim Huddleston, Adam Lewis and Tommy Simmons have all agreed to sign on with our blog!  We welcome them with open arms, and look forward to the new year with their contributions.  We believe that each writer will bring something new and fresh to what we are trying to do, and they will all contribute in their own way to make the blog better and deeper than before.  Welcome Tim, Adam and Tommy!

All for now.  As always, GO COUGS!
