Happy Tuesday Cougar Fans!

In about 24 hours the fax machines in Bohler will be cranking out 25 or so Letters of Intent from this year’s crop of fresh blood.  In case you missed it, yesterday the Cougs 1) landed top-50 MLB in Grant Union’s Darryl Paulo, and 2) got a commit from a huge offensive line prospect in Wendell Taiese out of Oakland.  Paulo chose the Cougs over Oregon State and San Diego State, while Taiese turned down an 11th Hour offer from Dennis the Devil (or is that Vandal, Cowboy, Cougar, Seahawk, Hurricane, 49er, or Beaver?).

Check out some video on big Wendell, #78:

Good get!

But today I am going to talk about something else.  Read on for more…

As you probably know by now, currently Wazzu fans are being ripped across the Puget Sound for a variety of things.

First there was a report that Coach Bone took out a full page ad in the Daily Evergreen pleading with Cougar fans to keep it classy.  No offense to Percy Allen, who is a fine journalist, but I would hardly call this a full page ad.  As a newspaper advertising sales rep myself, I believe this is more of a Letter to the Editor.  Secondly, I think it’s important to look at the context of the letter.  In the past, there have been instances where Cougar fans have been less than classy towards our opponents.  That being said, I would say this plea was a preventative measure because there is a UW Basketball player being investigated for rape!

While it is no secret as to who the accused player is, the Zzu Cru kept their taunting fairly toned down in only chanting, “no means no.”  There was no mention of the alleged crime, the player’s name, or any profanity used.  This is a college basketball game and any amount of “dirt” on a player will be used.  I remember in 2002 taunting the Arizona Wildcats players who were caught stealing candy from a convenience store as the PA System in Beasley Coliseum blared “I want candy” by The Strangelovers.  Your student section is incredibly elaborate in digging up dirt, phone numbers, etc. on visiting players.  This is what home-court advantage is all about.

The Dawg Pack would have done the exact same thing if there were a Cougar player accused of such a crime.  I seem to remember a Mexican Siesta atmosphere at Hec Ed a few years back when a certain visiting coach was alleged to have cheated on his wife with a hooker in Tijuana.  I will also bet my bottom dollar that Reggie Moore will get an earful for his recent run-in with the law.  What’s the difference?  And if you want to criticize WSU fans, well, really?  UW fans have a blog entry of some sort that helps “coach up” their own dawg pack, with something called “Dawg Pack Dirt”, where stuff about each player is posted as something for the students to use in their taunts

But if you thought Cougar fans were bad, wait until next Saturday.  The fans in Eugene will take things to a whole different level!  This is the fanbase who spit on Kevin Love’s father, a former Ducks basketball player no less, when UCLA visited Mac Court a few years back.  Hopefully UW fans will be wearing their big boy undies come Saturday…

But that’s not all.  After UW was dismantled by the Cougs on Sunday night, everybody in the UW corner complained when WSU fans stormed Friel Court.  Brock Huard, Justin Dentmon, Chris Fetters, Bob Condotta, and Percy Allen all made comments about it after the then-18th ranked UW fell to the Cougs.

Ummm, isn’t this the same group of fans who rushed the field at Martin Stadium after the Dawgs knocked off the 2-9 Cougars in December?  To which they reply “Yeah, well, we clinched our first bowl game since 2002, of course that was ok.”  Well ok then…..but you also rushed Martin Stadium in 2002 and 2006 when your wins were next to irrelevant…..?

Double Standard?  Me thinks so.

Instead of commending WSU for shutting down Isaiah Thomas and Matthew Bryan-Amaning, they choose to find something to complain about.

To that I say, get off your high horse!  This is all part of the game and should be expected in a rivalry.

All for now.  GO Cougs!
