Happy Saturday, Cougs! Just a quick note to recognize a phenomenal achievement by one of our own…
One of the great (and possibly best ever) athletes in Washington State University history finished his college career yesterday. He didn’t do so under the bright lights of the Sweet Sixteen or in the Grand Daddy of ‘Em All, the Rose Bowl. Unlike Kyle Weaver, Jason Gesser or any other notable WSU athlete in a “big time” sport, Jeshua Anderson reached the pinnacle of his sport in relative anonymity on a rainy track in Des Moines, Iowa. That isn’t to say that his achievement wasn’t recognized. In fact, I’m pleased to see that with technology and media the way they are currently, I had no difficulty finding out that Anderson had become the NCAA 400M Hurdles Champion for the third time in four years (wsucougars.com has a particularly nice tribute). That said, try to envision what the coverage would be if the football team won three national titles in four years. Suffice it to say, Jeshua isn’t exactly basking in the glow that the star QB would be. He would have had a number of moments with the current QB should he stuck to his football gig, but clearly he made the right decision in dedicating himself exclusively to the track. By all accounts it appears that Jeshua Anderson will be representing the United States at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. It’s easy to rattle off the best Cougar football players of all time, but Bernard Lagat and Gerry Lindgren probably aren’t names that come to mind right away. I know I’m not alone in the sentiment, but before his name gets lost in the non-major sport ether, I wanted to take a moment to say, “Congratulations, Jeshua”. I’m absolutely certain that Washington State will always be with you and I hope that what you’ve accomplished always stays with fans of Washington State.
Go Cougs.
