Vince Grippi Joins the WSU Football Blog Staff (plus other news!)

Happy Friday everyone! There is a lot of big news to report on from the Cougar Nation this week, so without further ado, lets get you all caught up. For starters we would like to welcome the newest member of the WSU Football blog staff, Mr. Vincent Bartholomew Grippi.

Vince Grippi Joins the WSU Football Blog Staff (plus other news!)

Some of you may know Vince from a little blog called Sportslink where for the last couple years he has diligently hammered out whatever Cougar news he could squeeze between all those stories about the Shock (I think they won the lingerie bowl last year), the Spokane Chiefs and Gonzaga womens basketball. Well his toil was not in vain and as a reward he is finally getting his cup of coffee in the big leagues. Welcome to the WSU Football Blog, Vince! When I infomed Vince of our decision, he expressed his relief saying, “I couldn’t be more thrilled, this is such an honor to be chosen. I knew that a lot of talented writers would be vying for the position, and Bob Condotta would be too”.

Vince had his work cut out for him, going up against such luminari scribes as Howie Stalwick, John McGrath and Greg Witter, but the old battle axe bested them all by baking us a delicious plate of brownies and introducing us to a favorite past time from back in his college days… playing the first 45 minutes of the Wizard of Oz on mute while listening to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. I still can’t feel the left side of my face. Needless to say, he has intimate access to the Cougar Men’s basketball team and that was something we just couldn’t say no to. Welcome aboard sir!

In other Cougar news…

A lot of you were probably as surprised as I was to see Ben Loewen accepting Senior Night honors before our last regular season home game against UCLA. I for one, raced home after the game to check the official roster and sure enough, he is listed as a red-shirt junior with one more year of eligibility.  In the days that followed the Cougs played in both the Pac-10 and NIT tournaments, suffered a rash of drug busts at the hands of the Pullman Stasi, and got the go-ahead to add a fancy new scoreboard to Beasley. Lost in all these goings on was the question of just what the heck was going on with Ben Loewen? Well Coug fans, we finally have our answer and I am sad to report that Ben has decided to forgo his Senior year and make himself elligible for the NBA draft. When asked about his decision, Ben was humble as usual, saying only that this has been a dream of his since he was a kid and he just feels like its now or never. Of course there is always the risk he won’t be selected in which case Ben says he plans to become a scab during the upcoming lockout.

Another bit of news that has flown under the radar is the recent announcement from Bill Moos that WSU will be adding Men’s Softball starting with the 2012 season. When asked what went into this decision, Moos was succinct as always saying “This is the conference of champions and frankly, we haven’t been doing our part to add to that legacy. Men’s softball gives us a chance to compete in a sport with no other competition to stand between us and a National Championship.” When asked about where the games would be played Moos offered that with no other teams to play against, a venu was not a concern at the moment.

Finally, a quick note about the upcoming Spring Scrimmage at Joe Albi stadium in Spokane. It turns out that in the last couple weeks Coach Wulff and his staff, tired of being constantly run down and insulted on message boards, have thrown down the gauntlet and challenged some of their biggest protractors to “walk the walk” and see if they can do any better. I was informed by WSU Sports Information Director Bill Stevens that the WSU staff will coach the 2nd team offense and defense against the 1st team offense and defense who will be coached by a collection of message board “Haters”. Amongst the haters are Cougzone.com’s very own Biggs and CougInSpain along with Cougfan’s OLRock. When asked how practices are going with their new coaches so far Jeff Tuel said, “Pretty good, I mean we basically know our plays and stuff so they just yell stuff at us like “Losing is for Losers!” Sometimes we’ll ask them what play to run, or whatever and they’ll just say “Stop making excuses and just win, dammit!” When reached for comment by phone in Barcelona, CougInSpain said he was looking forward to the opportunity to “wax those Division II scrubs”, but noted that it would be an uphill battle with such “crappy recruits” like CJ Mizell, Deone Buccanon, Travis Long, Marquies Wilson, Jeff Tuel, John Fullington, Aaron Dunn, Nolan Washington, Sekope Kaufusi, Jared Karstetter and so on.

Well, thats all for now Coug fans. Happy April Fools Day and as always…

GO COUGS!
