Maybe I shouldn’t post so many Sabres thoughts in a week. This team is a riddle trapped in an enigma. I bash them, and they shutout the best team in the NHL. I commend them, and they pull out a couple of stinkers against the Devils and Rangers. Am I just a fair weathered critic? I don’t know.
Here’s the bottom line about the Sabres. They have some good things working for them (goaltending & defense) and some bad things working against them (lack of scoring, lack of scoring..and more lack of scoring). I’m a scoring guy (not so much with the ladies:), which makes the Sabres lack of offense jump at me more than the prominence of their defense. Either way you slice it, the Sabres showed up against a good team in Washington, and were able to answer the bell after such a poor showing against Jersey.
-What can you say about Henrik Tallinder and Tyler Myers. After Miller, the pair of defenseman are probably the most consistent for the Sabres this season. They went against the top line of Ovechkin and company, and shut them down. We even got to see Tallinder, of all players, pull a nice coast to coast move and then was able to follow his own shot, and beat Jose Theodore. That scoring sequence should be played in future Sabres film studies. Get the puck on net when you’re on a 2 on 2 break. Forget the fancy passing, you hear that, Tim and Thomas?-
-I still stand by my original post from weeks ago that the Sabres should consider trading Tallinder. It’s nothing against Sir Hank, but the Sabres don’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to resigning UFA. Why not try and get some scoring help? Tallinder has two things going for him, an expiring contract and playing his best hockey in years-
-Maybe their is something in the water in Portland. That’s two games in a row that a Portland call-up has scored a goal (Tyler Ennis against the Flyers). Nathan Gerbe was all over the ice tonight and arguably was the Sabres best forward, assisting on the team’s first goal and even setting up a couple of scoring chances for Derek Roy (Who of course couldn’t cash in). Gerbe was the spark that Lindy Ruff was looking for-
-What can you say about the Sabres MVP, Ryan Miller, that hasn’t already been said. He was Brendan Morrison’s worst nightmare, stoning him on two stupendous scoring chances in the 1st and 3rd period. It’s scary to think what this team’s record would be if they could score more than two goals a game-
-I don’t know what Mike Robitaille was watching, but I don’t share his enthusiasm for what he saw in Thomas Vanek. I saw a player who had an open lane on Theodore, only to try and make an impossible pass to Hecht. I saw a player who whiffed on a couple of point blank scoring chances on goal. Sure, the guy was going to the net and trying to get rebounds. But I am seeing a player that doesn’t have that much confidence in his own shot-
-Great, Celino and Barnes got Christmas decorations for their annoying ass promo during Sabres games. What’s going to happen when Valentine’s Day comes around? Are they going to exchange Valentines, and then cute little hearts will come out of Barnes bald head?-
