Random Friday Thoughts

Why wouldn’t Mike Holmgren consider coming to Buffalo? I’m sure you all know that the Bills reached out to Holmgren and were rebuffed, because he wanted to be a GM, not a coach. Well, why wouldn’t the Bills or vice verse entertain the thought of Holmgren running their football operation and then hire his own coach?

I know a cynic Bills fan would say it’s because the Bills are so terrible and unappealing to a big fish (or walrus) like Holmgren, which may be true. But are you going to tell me that the Browns franchise is better off? Are you going to build your team around Josh Cribbs? The Browns this decade have been just as bad as the Bills. I think Russ Brandon is not as big on the house cleaning as some fans may believe.

Speaking of big name coaches, I just read that Mike Shanahan told the Bills during their initial interview, that he wanted Bruce Allen as a part of his regime in Buffalo, if he decided to go there. Well, Allen is now in Washington running the football operations. Typical Bills.

If the Bills were really serious about getting Shanahan, wouldn’t they have called Allen up? Maybe they were just waiting for the cost of flights to go down after Christmas to fly Allen in? In the competitive nature of the NFL, you have to be swift. The Bills are about as swift as an Anchor. To me, this is just another sign that the Bills were just talking to big name coaches so they could get the morale of the fans up. Pathetic.

So now Lindy Ruff is saying that it was 4-5 players that were infected by the bad food in Ottawa. I wonder if the Sabres will call the health department or better yet, have one of their health care sponsors provide a testimonial about the impact on eating Canadian food.

It didn’t take a genius to realize that the media apologists (WGR mainly) would give the Sabres a pass against the Sens. I mean, Patrick Lalime being sick was sooooooo key in the loss. I don’t know about you, but doesn’t it seem like WGR avoids talking about the Sabres after a loss? For two straight days, all we heard was how the Sabres resembled the 05-06 season. Now the topic has changed to picking the all-crappy Bills team for this decade. Hmmm.

As far as the Pat Kaleta hit goes, what did you expect? This is the NHL! The league that decided to float a mystery memo after “No Goal.” The same league that had a work stoppage for over a year. All of these issues have everything to do with why the NHL has no clue what they are doing in any aspect of their business. The NHL is completely unsure of themselves. Do we allow fighting or not? Do we want high scoring games or defensive hockey to appease the old schoolers? More is lost by indecision, then by wrong decision.

The NHL polices themselves as much as the LAPD do it in South Central. I seriously think that Gary Bettman sits in an office with the executive producer from Versus and TSN, and asks if they really want to showcase this specific player on television. In other words, the NHL doesn’t care about the well-being of a guy like Kaleta, that’s why Ruutu didn’t get suspended.
