The Weekend Brief

–Thank goodness! Preseason football is finally over! No more stupid soundbites from players saying, “Oh, I’m in the best shape of my life and this new scheme we are doing is going to change football as we know it.” The hype is finally over and now we can get down to business–

–In case you guys are new to my blog, you should know that I detest preseason football. It’s the biggest farce in professional sports. Don’t get me wrong, I get why people have a vested interest in preseason, because they can “view certain individuals.” However, my problem is that those “certain individuals” maybe going up against vanilla game-planning and guys who are only playing to NOT get hurt–

–If anything, this Bills preseason is going to test my theory on the exhibition season not meaning a damn thing. Edwards looked sharp and so did the 1st team offense. Lets see how that translates into the regular season–

–I still think James Hardy is making this team. You just can’t bail out on a 2nd round pick that has only played a handful of games. I know fans want the kid from UB to make the squad, but you need to have guys with upside. It’s not about this season for the Bills, instead, it’s about the long-term investment for the franchise. Something tells me that besides Lee Evans, a lot of these guys aren’t going to amount to decent #2 guys. Hardy has potential, and the Bills have to try to uncap it–

–BTW, I’m not going to kill the Bills for deciding to kill off Hardy. If anything, it would mean that this new regime is absolutely done with the previous drafts that were led by Tom Modrak. I’ll be frank, the reason why I haven’t been able to jump fully on board with the Nix/Gailey partnership is because I think Modrak has a huge say in personnel. The dude should have been fired 10 times by now and should be scouting for the Toronto Argos. If the Bills cut ties with Hardy, then it will show me that Gailey/Nix are starting with a clean slate. Either way, I guess I’ll be fine with whatever decision they make on Hardy. Weird, right?–

–Say what you will about Trent Edwards, but this is his team…again!–

–I swear, this will drive me crazy till the day I die, but will the Bills ever find a serviceable tight end!? Hey, JP Foschi, don’t they teach you how to catch the damn ball in college or Pop Warner? Didn’t your dad show you how to catch the ball in the backyard when you were 7? This isn’t just about Foschi, it is about how every tight end who has ever put on a Bills uniform in the last 15 years has been a complete waste–

–Want to know what I like most about the preseason resurgence of Trent Edwards? He discovered that Lee Evans can go deep–

–I think it’s safe to say that Fitzpatrick has nailed the #2 job. Unfortunately for Brohm, he didn’t get much help from his wide receivers against Detroit. I still think Brohm makes the team as the #3 guy and then they put Levi Brown on the practice squad. However, it wouldn’t shock me if Brohm gets his walking papers. Frankly, I’m wasting too much time on depicting the Bills QB depth chart, because 2-4 are the same in my view…below average–

–My prediction on the wide receiver depth chart: Evans, Johnson, Parrish, Nelson, Hardy, Jackson-

–Can we stop with the Naaman Roosevelt fan club? Look, I get that he’s the local product and all, but lets stop with the Tim Kennedy nostalgia. I mean, how many undrafted wideouts do you want on this club?–

–I think it’s smart for the Bills to play the 4-3 defense as much as possible. The Bills personnel is more equipped to handle a 4-3 defense than a 3-4. Plus, the Bills have a ton of youth on the defensive line (IE: Carrington and Troup), which should be groomed for the future. You can’t become the next line of defense by sitting on the bench–

–Also, if you look at the Bills linebacking core, especially on the outside, something tells me that none of those guys are going to be the future of this team–

–OK, maybe Poz–

–As for the Team Edward vs Team Jacob banter, AKA, Simpson vs Bell; I’d go with the guy that can play the best on special teams. Sorry, but if the Bills have to start playing their 4th string running back, then we are in deep trouble–

–BTW, I don’t get into the whole predicting the final rosters. Sorry, but I just don’t care about the 4th string running back and the 6th wide receiver on the depth chart. Give me my 22 starters, the 3rd and 4th corner, the 3rd and 4th wide receiver, and I’ll be happy–
