It has been a while since I mentioned Jim Kelly on this space. In case you don’t know, I’ll always be a fan of Kelly the football player and Kelly the ambassador of Buffalo. However, when it comes to speaking his mind about the quarterback situation (I love Tebow and we shouldn’t draft a QB from California), I’d rather have him just flip the ceremonial coin toss at Bills games. Well, Jimbo decided to speak his mind, again… (Click “Read more” below for the rest of the article)
about wanting to buy the Bills, prior to the game in Toronto. Look, Kelly’s been talking about these damn silent business partners for longer than the city of Buffalo has talked about building a new Peace Bridge (OK, not that long, but you get my point). I’m sorry, but until I find out that Mark Cuban, Tom Golisano, Arod, Jeremy Jacobs and George W. Bush are coming off an airplane to attend a shovel ceremony to break new ground for the Downtown Stadium, then I’m not buying any of this. Actually, that’s a little harsh, I’ll buy some of it, but I’m not exactly counting on it.
It’s old news if you ask me. How many times does this story have to make the front page of TBN or WGRZ.com? “WOW! Jim Kelly wants to save the Bills!! He’s had a conversation with Ralph and people over the phone. Hooray!” Newsflash, people: Nothing new has happened!
All I know is that Jim Kelly has said this and that about wanting to find people to buy the Bills and he won’t mention any names. Now, I get the reason why he’s playing his cards close to the vest, because Ralph Wilson is still alive and he wants to be careful. However, how many times does he have to talk about this? Just shut up and wait till something new happens. I know, I’m not allowed to question Lord Kelly, but I’m not seeing anything besides a ton of lip service.
Now, this is going to sound a little like an Oliver Stone screenplay, but don’t you think it’s kind of ironic that Kelly made his reassurance of wanting to buy the Bills prior to the Toronto game? You know, the game where most Bills fans are up in arms and constantly reminded about the possibility that the team is moving. To some people, Kelly represents the only hope for the Bills to stay in Buffalo. So, why not send Jimbo out to make his little speech about wanting to buy the Bills, so everyone feels happy! Now, I’m just speculating, but Kelly is an employee of the Bills, so what makes you think the team isn’t sending him mixed messages about buying the team, only to have him walk around like he’s in the driver seat, so he can make bold proclamations. I don’t know, but I recall him starting to poke his nose around purchasing the team once the deal for Toronto was made. Now, he did say that he didn’t think Buffalo needed Toronto to survive, so this may be all a mute point. We’ll see, I guess.
Now, if it makes you sleep better that knowing the fate of the franchise are in the hands of the former franchise quarterback, then ah salute. Sorry, but I’m not exactly there. All I know is that LA has like 3-4 stadium plans in motion, the Rogers people (allegedly) are telling the world that they want four home games by 2013, and the NFL always wants a market where the corporate dollar is at an all-time high. All of these allegations have paper trails.
Yet, all I have is Jim Kelly and his impromptu press conferences, with no names attached to buying the Bills, as evidence that the team is staying. Plus, he’s been saying this since 2007! Hell, that was like three GMs ago. Maybe I gave a double take then, but by now, he must have announced his intentions on wanting to buy the Bills like 20 times.
Tell me some new news, Jimbo. Then maybe, I’ll start taking you up on your offer.
