The Bills have signed QB Tyler Thigpen according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Kelly reports the deal as being for three years. Thigpen has five offers on the table, one of which was from the Dolphins, but opted to play for a team and coach that fully believes in his unorthodox approach and gambling style. Thigpen has been at the top of several lists as a possible target for the Bills because of his relationship with head coach Chan Gailey. (Buffalo Rumblings)
Mind of Joe: OMG! Where did this come from?! I never would have thought Tyler Thigpen would come to the Bills. Yes, I’m being sarcastic. It obviously makes sense for the Bills since they view Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter for this year. You’re not going to want a back-up QB who will be hovering over your starter’s shoulder. Of course, you also don’t want Billy Joe Hobert. Thigpen has been kind of penciled in for the Bills since the conclusion of the draft. I swear, I must have read about 10 different articles listing him as someone the Bills should sign.
Tyler’s best year came in 2008, when he started 11 games for the Chiefs and threw for 18 touchdowns. The one thing I find interesting is that Thigpen worked almost exclusively out of the Pistol offense with Gailey, and at times last year, the Bills tried implementing the offense with Fitzpatrick, but it never worked. Just worth noting. It also works out with the offseason being so short that Thigpen already knows the offense.
