The Bills & Texans played a professional football game on Sunday and here are my quick thoughts 2 days later:
MVP: The Bills really had no MVP here. I thought Mario Williams stood out, leading the Bills in tackles (7) and had a sack. I do want to give the Bills a shout out however in the uniform department. The Bills have finally nailed it when it comes to their uniforms. They may be losing, but they sure look good doing it.
LVP: The Bills' Linebackers and Secondary (not including Jairus Byrd). Andre Johnson had 8 catches for 118 yards. Owen Daniels chipped in with 4 catches for 62 yards. James Casey had 3 for 49. That's 15 catches for 229 yards. 15.2 yards per catch. Ever since Ben Coates played, the Bills haven't been able to cover a tight end. They also continue to play this off man coverage. No pressing or bump and run. The Texans killed Buffalo on play action roll outs all game long. Gilmore was a very good bump and run corner in college. Maybe, JUST MAYBE the Bills coaches should watch his college film again.
Stupid Chan Gailey moment: The moment Chan Gailey stepped on the field and put the head set on was the "Stupid Chan Gailey Moment" of the game. The Spiller & Jackson lack of touches has been discussed ad nausea. I want to focus on the play calling before halftime with Buffalo down 7-3. The Bills drive all the way down to the Texan 2. 4th and Goal and down 4 on the road. The Bills had a chance to make a statement against the AFC's best and they kick a stupid field goal. WHY KICK THE FIELD GOAL!?!?! Just an asinine coaching decision. If you don't get it, you have Houston backed up on their own 2 yard line. What's the difference in being down 1 or 4? I may not be a NFL Coach, but I do know that you tend to win more when you score more TDs than FGs. Also of note: Not one time when the Bills were inside the 20 on that drive did they even attempt a pass to the end zone. Chan Gailey, ladies and gentlemen.
Why CJ Spiller is being misused moment: Chan basically said post game that the Texans were taking away the run, which made the Bills pass more. Yet, on Buffalo's first offensive series of the game, the Bills came out with an empty set and 5 WRs. Read that again and see if it makes sense.
Stupid announcer moment: Actually I really didn't think there were any. I'm just glad CBS gave us their best duo in Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts. I think they are fantastic and deserve to be the #1 team on CBS.
Bottom Line: The Bills WILL NOT WIN ANY GAMES WHEN FITZ THROWS 35+ TIMES. He needs to be somewhere between 20-25 attempts. He isn't good enough. Spiller and Jackson? They are good enough. Jackson needs 15-20 total touches and Spiller needs 20+ touches per game. That's the winning formula.
All in all, this game was very boring, neither team played really well. Houston just has a better QB and know how to properly use their play makers. That was the difference.
